Object Detail
Description
Artist Charles Heaphy (1820–81) arrived in New Zealand, aged 19, in August 1839. He was employed as an artist and draughtsman by the New Zealand Company.
This is a print of Heaphy's painting. He painted this image of Lambton Harbour and Wellington in April 1841, and it was published by the company the following year. Reflecting his employer’s needs, Heaphy presented the new settlement in a positive light in order to attract new immigrants and investors. The ships have easy access, cows wander the beach, the settlement sits on a grassy plane, and the hills in the background are gentle and suitable for farming.
