Object Detail

Description
This painting was purchased for the City Art Collection in 1970 and previously hung in the West Gallery of the Town Hall.

Robert Ellis was born in Northampton, England 1929. He studied at Northampton School of Art from 1944 to 1947 and attended the Royal College of Art, London from 1949 to 1952. He came to New Zealand in 1957 to take up a position as Senior Lecturer at Elam School of Fine Arts where he taught from 1957 to 1994.

From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s Ellis produced an extensive series of Motorway paintings. They do not depict any particular city but seek to create a universal symbol of the city. The bird’s-eye view common to all the Motorway paintings is due in part to Ellis’s RAF experiences as an aerial reconnaissance photographer and in part to his interest in maps and cartography.
