Object Detail

Description
At her exhibition, titled Vicious Circles, at Toi Pōneke Gallery, Kirsty Lillico presented an installation of large fabric banners, based on Google Earth views of the Canterbury Plains (Kā Pākihi whakatekateka a Waitaha) and the Mackenzie Basin (Te Manahuna). The green irrigation circles that now inhabit these landscapes are central motifs in this exhibition, which refers to the history of geometric abstraction as a tool of political protest.

Kirsty Lillico notably won the 2017 Parkin Drawing prize for her work State Block made from carpet cut and pieced together into the shape of a modernist apartment floor plan.
