Bridget Reweti (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi) works with photography and moving image to explore the representation of New Zealand's iconic landscapes and to critique the ‘scenic view’. Informed by customary knowledge of Māori names and narratives, Reweti seeks to show the land as known and inhabited through portraying the shifting set of roles between observer and participant.

In these hand-coloured silver gelatin prints, made on an Indigenous Visual and Digital Arts residency at The Banff Centre in Canada, Reweti offers a commentary on tourism and the concept of the national park as a living museum, questioning what it means to stay and make work in a place that is not your own.


Bridget Reweti (born 1985, Tauranga Moana) holds a Masters, first class honours in Māori Visual Arts, 2012 from Toioho ki Āpiti, Massey University and a PgDip in Museum and Heritage Studies, Victoria University of Wellington. Reweti has undertaken national and international artist residencies—she is the 2020 Frances Hodgkins Fellow, Otago University— and her work is held in private and public collections. Reweti is part of the Mata Aho Collective of four Māori women artists. The collective participated in Documenta 14, Germany, was included in the exhibition Oceania at the Royal Academy of London and created the mural And Only Sea for the Wellington Central Library hoarding in 2019. Reweti curates exhibitions throughout Aotearoa, is the co-chair of Enjoy Contemporary Art Space Trust and co-editor of ATE Journal of Māori Art. Reweti lives and works in Wellington.
