Description
Sonya Lacey (b. 1976) is a New Zealand artist based in Wellington. She works with a range of mediums including performance, video and installation. Her practice focuses on communication.

In these tiny and delicate images Lacey has used a painting technique called airbrushing where layers of pigment are built up to produce areas of visual depth. The source imagery has been taken from the common online marketplace TradeMe.
Lacey received a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University in 2007.

She regularly exhibits in Wellington and around New Zealand in both solo and group exhibitions. Lacey has travelled to Canada, South Korea, the United States and Singapore on artist residencies. In 2020 she was a finalist in the prestigious Walters Prize, New Zealand’s top prize for contemporary art. Her work is in the collection of Victoria University of Wellington, the Chartwell Trust, Auckland and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
