Object Detail

Description
Originally from Tauranga, David Brown spent his early career in Europe as an archaeologist. He returned to New Zealand to pursue painting and completed a Master of Fine Arts from Massey University, Wellington in 2014.
Brown’s paintings reflect a continued interest in the use of grids to map out cultural and societal boundaries. Predominately a painter, Brown also works in installation and across various media and materials.

In AR 2015-33, bright, glossy, formal colour arrangements create an initial visual excitement, controlled by the hexagonal grid. On further inspection, areas of contradictory spatial depth are unnervingly sliced into with shards of sharp irregular interruptions. The AR series of paintings stem from an investigation into agricultural applications of colour and division; attempts to shape and control the living conditions for livestock; and the consideration of animals as property. Brown is interested in asking the question of: what do our actions and treatment of others, say about us?
