Object Detail

Description
Artist Simon Cuming works in printmaking, painting and is a musician.

This work Untitled is from his series Boutique Abstraction where Cuming takes each work through a series of prolonged transformations during its production - using several techniques, from stencils, to prints, to paints to create the finished piece. This laboured method results in a work visually reminiscent of early Modernist paintings. Cuming emphasises both the flat-plane optical experience of the work, rather than the painting being metaphorical, and the process of making the work over the end result.

Simon Cuming (born 1965, Upper Hutt) is an artist and educator. Described as an anarchistic creative force, Simon investigates sound, building homemade and "circuit-bent" sound generators and modulators, performing at City Gallery Wellington, 2017 with artist Jason Greig and at the Sydney Biennale, 2010 with artist Sean Kerr. He has led printmaking workshops at Christchurch Art Gallery, Hamish McKay Gallery, Wellington, and City Gallery Wellington. Simon Cuming lives and works in Wellington
