Object Detail

Description
Through his vivid imagery and rich symbolism, Matt Hunt takes us into a mythical underwater world, complete with spiritual visions, political ideologies and conspiracy theories.

Hunt often uses religious imagery in a non-traditional way, blurring the line between reality and comic book science-fiction. He constructs conflicting scenes of melodrama and enlightenment, horror and pleasure, kindness and cruelty. With a strong sense of humour, his work expresses religious stories where good triumphs over evil. At the heart of his work are human anxieties and aspirations in the 21st century and beyond.

As well as a visual artist, Hunt is a musician. He formed the band Cortina around 1999 with friend Bek Coogan. He was born in Palmerston North in 1967 and lives in Lower Hutt.
