Object Detail

Gary Peters takes a systematic approach to the creation of his work, using self-determined rules to break with the conventions of traditional painting styles and colour relationships. He often references or highlights aspects of architecture which may otherwise go unnoticed. In its original installation this work referenced a nearby air vent. In other situations, the abstract and vivid colourways may seem vortex-like and reverberate against office walls.

Gary Peters (born 1970, United Kingdom) received a BFA (hons) from The University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK in 1993, and completed a Master of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington in 2012. He was awarded a six-month residency at SNO Gallery in Sydney, Australia the same year. Peters has exhibited in the UK and across New Zealand, developing his practice from predominantly wall-based engagements with architecture to object-based paintings. Peters showed in the Courtenay Place Park Lightboxes in 2015, at Te Tuhi Contemporary, Auckland in 2017 and presented a solo show at Wellington’s Toi Pōneke Gallery in 2019. Peters lives and works in Wellington.
