Description
Painter Séraphine Pick was born in 1964 in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands. Pick moved to Christchurch to study painting, graduating from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1987.
A highly commended artist, Pick received the Olivia Spencer-Bower Foundation Art Award in 1994, and the Rita Angus Cottage Residency in Wellington the following year. In 1999 Pick was the Frances Hodgkins Fellow at the University of Otago. In 2009 the Christchurch Art Gallery exhibited ‘Tell Me More’ a retrospective of Pick’s work from 1994 – 2009 curated by Felicity Milburn. This survey exhibition featured over one hundred of Pick’s paintings and travelled to City Gallery Wellington in 2010.
Pick’s expressive paintings are references to her dreams, childhood memories and suppressed desires, often depicting erotic mythological figures in Bosch-like mindscapes. In The Barber an everyday encounter is made strange, portrayed in a dream-like setting. The Barber was first exhibited in Pick’s solo exhibition ‘Pocket Full of Rainbows’ at Hamish McKay Gallery in 2010.
Pick lives and works in Wellington.
