Description
Hemi Macgregor (Ngati Rakaipaaka, Ngai Tuhoe) is a highly respected artist and teacher. He graduated from the prestigious Māori Visual Arts programme at Te Pūtahi-a-Toi, Massey University in Palmerston North. Alongside his art practice Macgregor works as a lecturer at the College of Creative Arts, Massey University in Wellington.
Koruru featured in Macgregor’s solo exhibition Remote Control at Page Blackie Gallery in 2012. In this exhibition, Macgregor explored ideas of observation and control, referencing New Zealand political events such as the anti-terror raids and the passing of the Search and Surveillance Bill. The ruru (native owl) acts as both an indigenous opposition to these actions and as kaitiaki (guardian). It asks who is watching and why?
