Object Detail

Description
Kerry Ann Lee is a Wellington-born artist, designer and educator. She received a Masters in Design from Massey University, Wellington and is currently based in Dunedin.

Lee was the first Wellington artist to participate in the Wellington Asia Residency Exchange (WARE). As part of this programme, she traveled to Shanghai for an artist residency at Island 6 Art Centre in 2009. In 2010, Lee returned to Shanghai during the World Expo for a residency and exhibition at AM Park.

Plan Nine is one in a series of digital montages that Lee created during her residency at AM Park. Inspired by science-fiction and past World Expo pavilions, the digital montages turn well-known aspects of Shanghai’s cityscape into surprising new futuristic visions of the Chinese city. Plan Nine is titled after a science fiction film and shows multiple images of the Radisson Hotel in full flight.

Plan Nine was first shown in New Zealand as part of Lee’s solo exhibition ‘Da Shi Jie/The Great World: Shanghai Works 2009-2010’ at Toi Pōneke Gallery. The work was also included in ‘Crystal City’ at The Dowse Art Museum in 2011.
