Object Detail

Description
Ben Buchanan's focus on abstraction and pattern making has seen him develop a highly idiosyncratic style and way of making art. His work is primarily focused on translating modernist abstraction into a hyper contemporary context with references to pop culture and music. His vibrant sense of colour and form lead the image to shift and pulsate creating a psychedelic and hypnotic vibe. The hard edges of the cut-vinyl pieces initially appear as grid-like perfection but on closer inspection the works slowly reveal an organic, handcrafted quality. They warm and create an open-ended space in response to the viewer’s perceptions. Buchanan's practice swings between the intimate and the monumental, ranging from small works on paper to huge site-specific installations.

Ben Buchanan (b. 1973, New Plymouth) is of Te Atiawa, Taranaki and Pakeha descent. He has received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic, a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts from Auckland University and a Master of Fine Arts from Massey University Wellington.

Buchanan has exhibited regularly around New Zealand in both group and solo exhibitions. Buchanan has created large cut-vinyl installations for the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the Dowse Art Museum and Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History. In 2012 Buchanan was the recipient of the Wellington City Council’s WARE residency. This saw him spend 3 months at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing where he exhibited at Beijing International Design week. Buchanan lives and works in Wellington.
