Description
Blue line 54 minutes and Blue line 56 minutes were produced by painting a line that navigated the space according to a set of rules. For each, Morris has set up a framework which intentionally restricts the scale, proportion and colour palette within which different formula direct the pattern making process. This can include the length of the passage of paint in any one direction, when to pause and change the form through alternating thickness or direction and when to stop. In doing so, the artist explores how a pre-determined action, once initiated, can determine the making of a painting distinct from aesthetics.

Simon Morris was born in Hamilton in 1963 and currently lives and works in Wellington. Morris’ work is held in the collections of Te Papa and Christchurch Art Gallery.
