Object Detail
Description
Kelcy Taratoa (Ngaiterangi, Ngati Raukawa) started exhibiting his work in 2001 and held his first solo exhibition in 2005. He originally planned a career in computer graphic design, but exposure to painting and sculpture in a UCOL visual arts course led him to fine arts.
Kelcy describes his work as a combination of social commentary and the representation of his own experiences growing up Maori in modern urban New Zealand, with its challenges to identity-building in settings that are devoid of cultural references. In this painting the artist, a confident urban Maori, looks out at the viewer surrounded by iconic images charting the impact of colonisation and globalisation on local cultures.
