Object Detail

Description
Dorothy Kate Richmond came to Wellington in 1894. By 1896, she was studying with James Nairn. In 1901 she met Frances Hodgkins in France. When they returned to New Zealand in 1902, the two ented a studio together in Bowen Street. After Nairn’s death there was little artistic stimulus in Wellington. This was until Richmond became an admired focus as a teacher and an example of the ability of a woman to establish and continue a career in art.
