Object Detail

Description
From an early age Thomas Arthur McCormack (1883-1973) was a keen observer of the natural world, its movement, form and colour. In 1921 he moved from Napier to Hill Street, Wellington where he lived and painted for 40 years. Essentially a self-taught artist, McCormack believed that 'Art is a matter of feeling and expression'.

His work has been described as having remarkable freshness, simplicity and rare quality of colour. Examples can be seen in many public collections. In 1956 he was honoured with an OBE for his services to art, the same year as exhibiting a retrospective show in Wellington.
