Object Detail

Description
Allen Maddox is remembered as being one of New Zealand’s finest exponents of abstract expressionism. He is also remembered for his hot temper and struggle with schizophrenia and alcoholism. Born in Liverpool, Maddox migrated to New Zealand in 1963 with his family.

For three decades he investigated the relationship between organised structure and loose gesture, building images primarily using grids and crosses. This work ‘Flower Piece’ is unusual for its lack of this common motif. There is little or no reworking in Maddox’s paintings. He has an improvised and spontaneous approach, combining the freedom of wild brushstrokes and vibrant colour. A pure enjoyment of the materials is apparent; a pleasure found in the brightness and thickness of the paint.
