Description
Wendy Masters (b. 1943) is a master watercolour artist who has painted and exhibited for many years. Using clean colours and confident brushstrokes, her paintings come to life with freshness. As well as her expressionistic scenes of Wellington and Kāpiti coast, Masters is a very skilled and admired still life artist. In her artworks she looks for shapes, shadows or lines which echo and reinforce each other. Masters paints that which surprises and delights her, from life, or from her own drawings and photos. Masters also makes works in clay and bronze which may surprise some, as she explains “to limit myself to one medium or style would be like cooking the same recipe every day.”

Masters began studying at the School of Design at Wellington Polytechnic in 1959 (now Massey University) and completed courses in both graphic design and fine arts. While still studying, she had drawings accepted for the New Zealand School Journal. Painting and sculpture have been her main source of work for over 50 years, and she has exhibited and taught both mediums extensively, with artworks in public and private collections. In 1996, 2001 and 2007 she was among an elite group of New Zealand watercolourists who participated in the International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition in Mexico. Masters is a life member of the NZ Academy of Fine Arts, Watercolour NZ, and Kāpiti Arts and Crafts Society.
