Description
Jane Zusters has worked in a range of media throughout her artistic career, primarily in photography and painting. Stepping off the Planet (for Marcus) is from a series of lithographs created at Muka Studio in Auckland. The symbol of a small rowboat with its connotation to rites of passage is one of Zusters' frequently used motifs. For her, the boat represents physical, intellectual, or spiritual journeys. Zusters has been working for the last four decades to break down the artificial barriers between art and politics, society, and life. Her current practice focusses on social, political, and environmental issues.

Jane Zusters (born 1951, Christchurch) was selected for the 1975 exhibition Six Women Artists at what is now the Christchurch Art Gallery. The following year she graduated from Canterbury University’s School of Fine Arts. Zusters was the 1991 Rita Angus Cottage artist-in-residence in Wellington and visited Berlin on a 1992 Goethe Institute Scholarship. Zusters completed a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in 2003 and has since exhibited her moving image and photographic works frequently throughout New Zealand. Jane Zusters lives and works in Christchurch.
