Description
William Cole painted this scene of the opening of the long-awaited changing sheds at the band rotunda on Oriental Bay. His friend, who received the painting as a wedding present and later gave it to the City, wrote: 'The night after the change-over was quite a gala affair with fireworks and bands playing, among other festivities. The yachts from the boat harbour sailed round and anchored in the bay; it was a calm, balmy summer's evening.'
