Description
Fault by Māori artist Ralph Hotere and Pākehā artist Bill Culbert is a conversational installation. Hotere’s black windows and Culbert’s fluorescent tubes contrast darkness with light. It a public artwork on the façade of the City Gallery.
This permanent fluorescent installation illuminates Civic Square with two bands of searing white light, playing on Wellington’s location on an earthquake fault line. It also suggests “the relation between Māori and Pākehā may be aligned but it is certainly not parallel.” Culbert and Hotere challenged tradition, they encourage us to always be active viewers
