Description
Freyberg was an outstanding commander during World War II and in 1945 he became New Zealand's governor general - the first with a New Zealand upbringing. When he was raised to the peerage in 1951, he took the title Baron Freyberg 'of Wellington, New Zealand and of Munstead in the County of Surrey'. He is commemorated in Wellington by the Freyberg Building and the Freyberg Pool, which acknowledges his champion swimming days.
