Object Detail

Description
Edward Jerningham Wakefield was the son of Edward Gibbon Wakefield and arrived in Wellington on the Tory in 1839. It was he who drew up the deed of purchase for the land for the settlement. He later published Adventure in New Zealand, a lively book on his experiences, prejudiced in favour of the New Zealand Company, but a valuable source on events of the period.
