Description
A scene at Petone in 1839 depicting three figures, Maori Chiefs Warepori and Epuni, along with Colonel Wakefield, inlaid in native woods. They are standing, with ships in the background. On the pedestal the title is inlaid in the centre and, there is a tui on the left-hand side and a kiwi on the right.

This picture, along with the one depicting Wellington in 1842, was submitted by James Petherick to the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition of 1885 in the Home Industry Branch. James Petherick was apparently 16 years old at the time. The 'New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, 1885 Official Record' records (page 180) that 'JAMES PETHERICK, Wellington, forwards two pictures in New Zealand woods. These pictures are important on account of their historical value. The one represents Colonel Wakefield with the Maori chiefs Waripori and Epuni, in 1839; while the other contains a view of Port Nicholson and Wellington in 1842.'
